MCM Comic Con 2023

Last weekend, I was lucky enough to attend MCM Comic Con in London as a panellist!

As I mentioned in my last post, I was invited to join the panel “The Weird in Weird Fiction” along with the incredibly cool (and weird - which is the highest compliment I can bestow) Rym Kechacha and Stark Holborn. Because I did YALC last year, I had a little panel experience under my belt, but I was still completely nervous - this panel wasn’t devoted entirely to YA, so I worried I’d be a little out of my depth. Plus, MCM was huge. Waaaay huger than I realised.

The panel was great - Stark asked really great questions and Rym is so smart and well read. I just kind of sat there and made bad jokes and rambled far too much about how much I love George Saunders (who is genuinely my hero). I leave every panel wishing I said more, spoke more eloquently, made better points, etc., but ultimately I had fun and got to meet a few new people too.

It was also really lovely to catch up with Rym, who I haven’t seen since we used to bump into each other on the Norwich playground scene. She spoke so articulately and is just a general delight.

Overall it was a positive experience and I’m once again struck by the thought - why don’t I go to more comic cons?
